September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. For many, it’s a blue ribbon on a lapel. For me, it’s personal. I am a Washingtonian, a proud Howard University alumnus, the founder of Know Your Numbers DC, and a prostate cancer survivor. My dedication to improving health outcomes among Black men comes from that battle. When I heard the words “you have prostate cancer,” it shook me—but it also clarified my mission. I started KYNDC because too many brothers were suffering in silence, didn’t know their numbers, or kept putting off the doctor’s visit.
